Can a 2 yr old have insomnia?

Carter is our super sleeper. He has been sleeping through the night for 2 years, goes down at night and for naps with a kiss and a song.
First the naps disappeared. He'll pretend to go to sleep for about 30 seconds and then he walks right out of his room saying "It's not dark outside. All done sleeping". (I didn't say he wasn't smart).
Last week he started waking up at night with weird requests. "Let's make cookies". "I wanna play cards". "Where's Max?"
And then he figured out how to climb out of his crib. Last night he got up a few hours after I put him to bed, and slept the rest of the night on the floor in the hallway outside of Jackson and Max's door. The night before, he got up at 2am and spent a few hours playing in the loft. I could hear him doing puzzles and looking at books. One time he spent an hour singing ABCs and jumping down the steps- one step for every third letter. He doesn't come and get us, which I guess is nice? But I'm not sure it's okay for him to be wandering the house in the middle of the night. I'm tired of putting him back in bed, just to have him lay down quietly, and then get right up again when I'm back in my room. (I do make sure the doors are locked- after finding him in the garage holding the garden clippers).

When I was pregnant with Carter I remember having such a distinct impression of who he was and what his personality was like. I really knew who was getting ready to come to our family. This silly, quirky, independent, does-his-own-thing guy. So when he does something odd I always think, "Oh yeah, I remember this person!"

My own little proof of the pre-existence :)

That is soooo cute! And, I sleep with Chloe in her room for the same reason!

that made me laugh really hard. How many times do I have to say this? We should live closer! Alta would have so much fun with that boy.

Oh my gosh. That is so precious! And a step for every third letter?? Who is this kid? He must have a good sense of rhythm.

I've heard many mothers talk about really knowing their child's personality in the womb. I hope I'm blessed with the same experience.

I'm so excited to see you guys, if we can ever get a hold of each other =)

Maybe Carter can be my buddy at 3am--no one else is around that time of the night to talk to.

He and Sawyer AND dad can be buddies. Sawyer does exactly the same thing. Except the whole going outside and getting the garden shears...Ha! I miss you SO MUCH!! Why can't we have family reunions EVERY MONTH!! Love you! Give the boys BIG kisses for me!
